What is microsuction?
Microsuction is a safe, quick, and effective method of removing earwax or debris from the ear canal using a gentle medical suction device and a microscope for precision. It’s widely regarded as the gold standard in ear wax removal—especially for children.
Microsuction allows the clinician to have direct visualization of the ear canal and eardrum using a microscope, making it a safe and precise procedure with minimal discomfort.
Why children might need microsuction?
Children may experience blocked ears from ear wax for several reasons:
Natural wax overproduction
Narrow ear canals
Use of cotton buds or hearing aids
Ear infections or persistent discharge
Hearing difficulties due to impacted ear wax
Frequently Asked Questions
Is microsuction safe for children?
Yes. When performed by trained professionals, microsuction is very safe—even for young children and toddlers. Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, microsuction does not involve flushing the ear with water, which reduces the risk of infection and discomfort.
Our clinicians use specialized paediatric equipment and a calm, caring approach to ensure your child feels safe and at ease throughout the process.
Is there any aftercare?
No special care is usually needed after the procedure and your child can return to normal activities immediately. If the wax was due to infection or chronic issues, further advice will be given.
What should we expect at the Appointment?
A thorough ear examination using a video otoscope to confirm the presence of ear wax.
A detailed explanation will be given to you and your child before we begin the procedure.
Most children tolerate microsuction very well. The procedure is Quick and painless, though they may hear a soft suction sound during treatment. In most cases there is an immediate improvement in hearing or ear comfort.
Microsuction is a well-tolerated and safe procedure for a wide range of patients, including children.”

Yes, for children with a history of grommet (ventilation tube) insertion, ear infections, or eardrum perforation, irrigation is contraindicated. Microsuction is considered the method of choice.
